David Fleming and Richard Cunningham Gouldsbury founded Longford Bank in about 1804. Few notes have been seen. Here is a 4 Guineas Post Bill issued in 1805.

The country based banks frequently employed the services of agents in larger cities such as Dublin. The promissory text on the Longford Bank Post Bill refers to an agent in Dublin with the text: Ten days after sight, Promise to pay this Sola Bill of Exchange to ______ or order Four Pounds Eleven Shillings Stg. Here or at the House of William Boyd, 6 Jervis St. Dublin.

Interesting to see that Wilson’s Dublin Directory mentions William Boyd as a Wine and Porter-merchant ! Also noteworthy is the line through the agents address on the Post Bill suggesting that the agency for Longford bank was discontinued at some time.

I had noticed the the strike through the agents address, an interesting addition to the banknote.

I believe a lot of these bankers were merchants of other kinds, doing a little banking on the side to make up for the lack of banking services at the time.
