Lighton, Needham and Shaw, Dublin. 1797-1805

Post by ThePloughman »

Lighton's Bank Dublin. There is no prominent bank title on this note, a bit odd considering that often the town or city of issue features in larger text.

Sir Thomas Lighton Bart., Thomas Needham and Robert Shaw.
Probably a forerunner of the other Needham and Shaw Bank.

One Guinea, 20 August 1805

This is a scarce note with Sir Thomas Lighton as lead partner. The history is interesting. Lighton and Needham were originally partners in Beresford's Bank and left the bank to set up their own partnership with Robert Shaw in 1797. The bank became Shaw's in 1805 upon the death of Thomas Lighton. Shaw's was eventually taken over by The Royal Bank of Ireland in 1836.

Nice to come across a Private Bank which survived the economic woes of the early 1800s, when so many of them went bust.

I see that the above 1 Guinea note did quite well at the recent DNW auction fetching a hammer price of £650. Few examples from this bank are known so the price reflects the rarity.

That's a very nice price for a Private bank note, good to see the rarer notes being appreciated.

Here is an example of a later note from Shaw's bank, 1833, issued under Robert Shaw, Thomas R Needham, and Ponsonby Shaw.
