William Alexander & Co. Dublin 1810-1820

Post by DOC »

William Alexander founded a bank in Dublin about 1810 at 15 Upper Sackville Street. The Bank became known as Alexander’s Bank and the original partners were William Alexander and Robert Alexander. Other family members subsequently joined the bank and three different partnership listings have been recorded.

The Alexander Family were prominent members of the business and political community in Dublin. William served as Alderman and Lord Mayor of Dublin. Some more details are provided in the following link.

https://dib.cambridge.org/viewReadPage. ... leId=a0103

The following 3 partnerships are known:

A) William Alexander, Robert Alexander Jnr. (1810-1811)
B) William Alexander, Robert Alexander Jnr., William James Alexander, William John Alexander (1811-1818)
C) William Alexander, Robert Alexander Jnr., William James Alexander, William John Alexander, William John Alexander Jnr. (1818-1820)

The Bank had strong connections with the north of Ireland and there was considerable nervousness in Belfast when the bank failed on 12th June 1820. Their notes are reported to have circulated widely in Cavan.

Examples of the Type B and Type C £1 notes are attached.

Here is a £5, Type C, note issued by William Alexander & Co. on the 10th November 1818. This is the highest denomination note reported to date for this bank. There is a minor modification of the design compared to the lower denominations. The £ sign is placed to the left of the denomination panel rather than including the word ‘POUNDS’ in the denomination panel.
