The production of euro notes is sent for tender every year. Not all Central Banks print notes but they still require them so they purchase them from banknote producers. These may or may not be Central Banks. €100 and €200 notes absolutely circulate here. The Central Bank of Ireland purchases them from producers. That is why you see bricks of unc notes here from various printing works.

I have come across both the 100 and 200 Europa series notes in ordinary circulation in Ireland (ie, issued from a bank), I did not record which issuing countries they were.

Thanks Mac and JohnnyQ for the confirmation that the 100 and 200 euro Europa Series notes reside within the Irish Banking System. I have not come across them myself in general change or dispensed from ATM’s. Attached is an example of a 200 Europa Series note printed in Italy.

Are printage figures available for the first series of Irish Euro notes (Series 2002) either official figures or estimate figures based on observations?

There is some useful information on banknote production in the annual reports of the Central Bank of Ireland. The 2001 Report is probably the most interesting.

As per the annual report there was a big jump in the circulation of £50 notes in 2001. A lot of ATMs were converted to use the fifty pound in 2001. However we almost never saw a full block of uncirculated £50s as 50k was more than the limit that the cash in transit companies could deliver in one box so they were split up before delivery and because after the central bank flushed the first large batch into circulation they only circulated for less than twelve months and so didn’t wear out and need replacing. Also I remember when the euro was frontloaded we recd a huge amount of €5, €10 and €20 notes. Almost all of which we remitted back to the central bank as we never used them.

Sounds like a lot of wastage of £50 notes occurred towards the end of the issue. I’d bet that a significant chunk of them were destroyed unissued.

I remember the Irish T 5 Euro notes reappearing in quantity in UNC a few years after 2001, after having been 'used up' in UNC for long enough for the note to have acquired a numismatic value of €10 - €15 each!

There were 10m unissued Irish pound banknotes at the end of 2001 according to the CBI. Half of these were £5 notes. We initially printed 57m €5 notes before the euro introduction. They were replacing approx 25m £5 notes and did eventually run out. I think people didn’t understand how the pooled production worked and as we were producing €10 notes assumed we would continue to do so and would not produce €5 notes. But in 2006 we switched production to €5 notes and that’s when they reappeared.

Irish Europa E20 note with code T010 has been released. Has anyone seen codes T003, T004, T007, T008, T009?

The Central Bank of Ireland continues to surprise with the issuing of a plate code T010 for the Irish Europa Series 20 euro notes. This code was first reported by Leonard last August ! The updated list of Irish Europa Series notes is attached. I have not seen any T007, T008 or T009 plate codes for the 20 euro notes to date.

I’ll keep an eye out for them. Came across two Z prefix €100 notes today. As with the others seen they were NZ. Serials NZ2405215506 and NZ3504953694. The plate letters were N001D2 and N001E3. I wonder are they test runs. They only ever appear with N and X print works.

You should hang on to those, they may be sought-after if it does emerge that they are a test run of some kind!

Series 2002 non-Irish €200 notes were issued in this country as no Irish €200 notes were printed, but were non-Irish €100 notes and €500 notes issued despite having our own issue?

Have any Lagarde euronotes been issued?

I recall an old report from the Central Bank of Ireland in the early 2000’s indicating an allocation for 200 euro T notes. They never did appear in circulation so perhaps the issue was cancelled.

100 euro and 500 euro notes from Germany and Italy did appear in circulation in Ireland but I am not sure if they were imported as bundles by the Irish banks and issued. JohnnyQ may be able to confirm.

As far as I know, Lagarde signed euro notes have not yet appeared in circulation. I expect that stocks of old notes will have to be used up first and the demand for cash has reduced due to the Covid19 Crisis. The attached link illustrates her signature.

I was told at the time that they received Austrian 200 euro notes for that allocation.

I’m curious the way they print these notes that cause the misalignment of the digits... the 2nd to last one in this serial # just seems odd how it would happen this way... the only thing I ever look out for on euro notes

The first euro notes with the signature of Christine Lagarde were released to the public on July 6th 2020. I have not come across one myself yet in circulation in Ireland. An example of a German 10 euro note is attached. Unfortunately, we should not expect to see any Irish euro notes with the new signature as The Central Bank of Ireland has ceased printing.

A pity we will not have any Irish-printed Euro notes with the Christine Lagarde signature.
The pool of new issues for collectors of Irish notes has stopped expanding!

As far as I know we printed all the denominations from €5 to €100 in Ireland supplemented with €20 notes printed by De La Rue. The plate letter on these was H. They Central Bank ordered €200 and €500 notes from Austria. The €500s had letter code T and print works letter F. The €200 notes were all country letter N. I ordered a lot of €200 notes every week and flushed them out as much as possible to the extent that I got a phone call one day from the cash centre asking why I was ordering the notes as nobody else was. All the new €200s issued at the start were Austrian and when those ran out we were issuing X letter notes. I’ve never seen a T €200 so can only assume they were never printed.

Sometimes researchers carry the burden of standing out!

I reckon that if there had been any T notes, you would have got one.
