It pays to be vigilant and check your change. It seems that Movie Prop euro notes have been spotted in circulation. Something to watch out for :!:

Those fakes are surprisingly good, a wonder the Euro Central Bank allows them to be made.

Not quite intended to be fake notes, however the color coding of these shopping vouchers at Shannon airport bear a striking resemblance to the series b notes from 1-20. Must take them with me the next time I’m flying through Shannon... lol

Attractive designs. I have not seen these before. Do you know when they were issued?

1994/1995 I believe. Looks like it was developed for French travelers to Ireland... time to dust off the Leaving Cert French books to translate

These are really well printed. Is that Yeats on the 10 Pound bill?

Is it possible to see a close up of the writing on one of them?
And do you have a pic of the other side?

Oh nice! These are interesting. I have not seen one before.

There were other local town token issues being produced around that time too, I have a scan somewhere, of a 'Roma' note, from the late 1980s if I recall correctly.

The RO•MA was produced in 1999 (I was a bit out on the date there). It was a local currency sponsored by local businesses, which was issued in Boyle, Co Roscommon. The name came from ROscommon-MAyo.

Here is the RTE report on it at the time: ww w.rte.ie/archives/2019/0618/1055982-local-currency-for-ballyhaunis/ The Mayo town of Ballyhaunis issues its own legal tender the ROMA

I don't know what other denominations were produced, the 1 RoMa note is the only one I have ever seen.

Mac,

I never knew of the existence of a Ro-Ma note(s) issue, though I'm just down the road in Galway. How many were issued and how were they redeemable?

I did hear of a Yellowbelly/Yellabelly note being issued down in Wexford around the time of the 1798 commemorations but was never able to get any traction in getting an example either :-(.

The RTE report is all that I know about them. Looks like £1 notes only, and they were backed by various businesses. The above example is the only one I have seen.

Has anyone come across fake/forged notes for any of the series collections? Having collected for over 30 years I’m perhaps surprised I have not stumbled on one.

Contemporary forgeries of the Central Bank of Ireland are seldom seen. I came across this example of an O’Connell £20 contemporary forgery for sale on ebay recently.

Forgeries of B Series £10 and £20 notes have occasionally been seen at shows, and also C Series £10 and £20 notes.
Lavery £20 note forgeries are known also.

The C Series forgeries tend to be less interesting as many of the later examples are just good quality colour copies or print outs from digital machines.

B Series forgeries are more interesting in that they were printed. Many of them have incorrect prefixes for the dates on the notes, and at least one instance of a date not existing on a genuine note is known. In general, the quality of the forgeries was quite good. I have not heard of any forgeries of fivers or £1 notes.

Forgeries are often let down by a poor quality representation of the watermark.

An article by F.E. Dixon in Irish Numismatics (IN 76, July-August 1980, P.163) provides some background into a fascinating local issue by Our Lady’s Island Parish Council (Wexford) in 1941. Given the shortage of fuel during World War II, the note issue was implemented by the Parish Council as a means to promote harvesting of turf during a particularly promising season. Shopkeepers were requested to honour the token currency with a promise of payment once the turf was harvested and income generated. A token or tally card for 1 shilling is known payable within the confines of the parish but it is possible that other denominations were issued.

Crudely typed up and probably printed in some quantity.
I think this would qualify as a Local Currency.
