DNW Auction of Paper Money
April, 9, 2018. The sale features an important range of Irish banknotes, including Part 2 of the Anthony Lenny date collection of 10 Shilling Notes.

DNW, London have a nice offering of Irish notes in their April auction.

There are a lot of very nice grade Irish Free State notes, and ETO war code notes in this second part of the 10 Shilling note collection. It is an exceptional collection, in terms of the overall grade of the notes, and the scope it covers.

DNW Auction of Paper Money
October, 1 & 2, 2018. British, Irish and World Banknotes

This sale features a broad range of Irish banknotes, including several very rare Notes.
The catalogue can be downloaded from the DNW website.

The highlight of the Irish banknote offerings is the Provincial Bank of Ireland £10 Ploughman note number 01PT 000001. This is a note of the highest rarity despite its lower grade. Lot 208. Estimated at £7,000-£9,000, it will be interesting to see what it fetches on the day.

A decent range of other Ploughman notes are also on offer, including a Northern Bank £1 note, dated 10.6.29 with Knox signature, one of the rarest issues of the series. Lot 205. Estimate: £2,800-£3,200.

In addition to the two rare Ploughman notes, there is a nice range of Lavery banknotes which include several £50 and £100 notes of Type 6 with Brennan McElligott signatures. The Fifty Pound notes of this signature combination are less commonly offered.

There is also an attractive partial proof of the Series B £20 note.

There are quite a few scarce notes on offer among the world notes also.
A highlight would be Lot 1002, South African Reserve Bank, £100, 8 September 1933, a very rare note with an estimate of £3,000-£4,000 in VG grade.

Whytes 'The Eclectic Collector' auction
April 6, 2019 includes 80 Lots of Irish notes.

The 80 Lots in this sale comprise largely £20 notes.

By far the most interesting banknotes on offer are Lot 454, and Lot 455, a pair of war code £20 notes, rarely offered in any grade.

Although not graded, both notes are quite nice, Lot 454, dated 8.3.43 looks to be in the VF region; and Lot 455, dated 7.6.43 a bit lower grade.
Both dates have previously been recorded, though these two notes are new to the census. Both notes are a considerably better grade than the average seen for this type.

A nice pair of rare notes in decent grade.
It will be interesting to see what they fetch.

Image
Image

There are a lot of £20 notes, both A Series 1976 and B Series 1981-1983 in nice grade, offered as small runs in sequence, as well as some earlier £20 notes, including a 1949 in low grade.

Additionally there is a good variety of other denominations 10/- through to £10 offered in mixed lots.

The auction catalogue can be viewed on Whytes website https://www.whytes.ie and downloaded as a pdf.

DNW Auction of Paper Money
Thursday 12 March 2020. Irish Banknotes

It is unusual to see a sale dedicated exclusively to Irish banknotes, with lots of rare dates and issues on offer.
There should be something for everyone in this auction.

There is a good range of Lavery notes, Ploughman notes, and pre-partition notes of the Joint Stock banks on offer; as well as a range of Private bank issues. Also on offer are Northern Ireland notes, and a range of pre-production designs for the last series of Provincial Bank of Ireland, and later First Trust Bank notes.

There are some very rare notes on offer in this sale.

The catalogue can be downloaded from the DNW website.

Image
Image

Also among the Lavery section is Lot 167, a decent example of a 1943 war code £20 note.

Further war code offerings include a nice grade pair of £1 notes dated 29.10.43, one each with code Y and displaced code G; and a range of other war code notes covering all denominations.

10 Shilling notes are headed up by Lot 168 a 13.8.46, the better of two known examples of this rare date; a 1929 in VF

A broad selection of Ploughman notes covers proofs, Specimens, and notes of all eight banks, including three £10 notes; and two Northern £1 notes and a Knox £5 note.

Lot 129, a decent grade £10 note, Munster & Leinster Bank.
Lot 138, a very nice example of a Northern Bank £1 note, at GVF, at the better end of what is available.
Lot 140, a Knox signature Northern £5 note.
And some nice grade £1 notes.

Image

A small section of superior Series B and Series C replacement notes are on offer, including a sequential pair of KKK £50 notes (Lot192, and 193) in UNC,
and £20 replacement note EEE 000007, the first time such a note with number below 000010 has been offered.

Image

The selection of pre-Partition Joint Stock banknotes covers all the banks, most notably the Bank of Ireland, Northern, Ulster and Belfast Banks; as well as some Northern Ireland issues.

The highlight of this section is Lot 20, a nice example of a Bank of Ireland £20 note. Also on offer are two 1929 £20 Bank of Ireland notes, a scarce low printage issue.

DNW Auction of Paper Money
Thursday 24 June 2020. British, Irish and World Banknotes

DNW generally have a good selection of Irish notes in their banknote auctions. With 188 Lots of irish notes in it, this one is no exception.

There is a decent range of Irish notes, including a selection of pre-production designs for the last series of Provincial Bank of Ireland, and later First Trust Bank notes.

Some rare notes on offer in this sale, most notably a trio of nice grade earlier Lavery £50 notes.
Lot 176, a 1943 £50 note in GEF grade.
Lot 177, a 1946 £50 note in VF grade.
Lot 178, a 1954 £50 in VF grade.

Also up is a nice example of a Northern Bank Ploughman £5 note, Lot 160.

Lot 155 is also interesting, an Agricultural and Commercial Bank of Ireland, £1, Roscrea branch.
This is the first note of the later (1839) design seen for Roscrea.

Among the non-Irish notes on offer is Lot 9, an unusual error of a Bank of England, Fforde, £10, 9 January 1967, with three serial numbers printed at top left!
Also very worthy of mention is Lot 634, Military Authority in Tripolitania, 1000 Lire, ND (1943), a rare note in a nice original condition.

Another interesting note is Lot 597, a non-military Government of Iraq, 1/2 Dinar Short snorter, ND (1942), serial number G026, 774, Lord Kennet and Ata Amin signatures , B.O.A.C link to 1953 London to Christchurch air race.

Whytes 'The Eclectic Collector' auction
July 25 & 26, 2020. The sale includes 96 Lots of banknotes, including a War code £20 note.

There are a lot of interesting historical collectibles in this sale, which are beyond the scope of this post.

The banknotes are on day 2, Sunday, and are an online only sale.

Lot 550 is the most interesting banknote.
A war code £20 note, dated 5.4.43 in About VF grade. This is the first instance of a note of this date being seen. Estimated at 5,000-7,000 Euro.
Whytes do seem to have a knack for attracting these notes when they come up!

Image

There is a range of 13 Ploughman notes, with three Munster & Leinster £10 notes, including a GVF sequential pair, Lot 515. The estimate of 12,000–15,000 on the pair of Ploughman £10 notes is likely a Typo, as it far exceeds their value. This Lot won’t sell at this price level.
Lot 520 is a collectible Northern Bank £1 note, Good Fine, estimated at 800–1,000 Euro.

There are a lot of Central Bank of Ireland Lavery £20, £50, and £100 notes. Some of these are earlier dates. Others are slabbed.

A good range of B Series and C Series notes includes £100 notes, AAK 000042, GEF; and KKK 010005, UNC, estimated at 500–600 Euro.

DNW’s October sale has 1061 Lots in it with 169 Lots of irish notes. The Irish section includes another selection of pre-production designs for the last series of Provincial Bank of Ireland, and later First Trust Bank notes. These are from the bank’s archives.

Lot 293 is a nice example of a 1972 £100 note, at EF.

Lot 298 is an attractive C Series £10 note, dated 02.04.96 with serial number 999999.

Among the Northern Ireland notes are four Northern Bank 1999-2000 vertical format polymer £5 notes: Lot 264, a Specimen 1999; Lot 265, an error with a missing layer of print; Lot 266, an error with serial number in the wrong place; and Lot 267, low number Y2K 000014. A nice little group.

Other notes on offer include Lot 165, a very rare early Bank of England £5 note, dated 28 Dec 1863, in EF grade, and Lot 159 an early Bank of England £10 note, dated 4 April 1793.

Mullens, Bray, Co. Wiclow The Collector's Cabinet auction
5th December 2020

This sale includes a selection of Irish coins and banknotes. Among the Lots on offer is Lot 342, a war code £20 note, dated 2.10.43 in good fine grade with some rust damage, and erased pencil writing on the reverse.
A decent example of a rare note. The estimate is 3,500-5,000 Euro, and reasonably accurate at that level.

The catalogue can be viewed from the Mullens website.

DNW Auction of Paper Money
Wednesday 24 February 2021. British, Irish and World Banknotes

DNW have 99 Lots of Irish notes in this sale, covering all eras of Irish paper money.

There is an interesting range of notes, including a very select group of the rarest issued notes from the pre-partition All-Ireland era.
Several of these are the only known examples of the note.

Lot 174, Bank of Ireland, £1, 7 September 1819. A lower grade issued note, of a rarely seen design, and rare.
Lot 175, Bank of Ireland, £1, Dublin and Westport, 7 May 1838. The earliest known example of the design featuring the row of Mercury heads, from the year the design was introduced, in an original About Fine condition.
Lot 177, Bank of Ireland, £1, 29 October 1881, signed Craig. An early example of a note with branches in sans-serif type in decent grade.
Lot 185, Belfast Banking Company Limited, £50, 7 December 1917. The only recorded example of a multibranch £50 note of this Bank.
Lot 216, Provincial Bank of Ireland Ltd, £20, 20 October 1904. This is thee only recorded example of a Provincial bank multibranch £20 note.

The note which will attract the most attention is the best example recorded of a Northern Bank Ploughman £10 note, Lot 240. The note is a nice original VF. The £10 heads up a selection of Ploughman notes, including some nice £1 notes.

There is a small selection of Legal Tender Notes, which includes two rarities.
Lot 245, a war code £20 (the same note that was first seen in the Mullens auction in December 2020) dated 2.10.43, in decent Fine grade.
Lot 249, Central Bank of Ireland, £50, 16 May 1960, a nice original AUNC grade. A note rarely seen in such high grade.

Additionally, there are some other nice notes on offer.
Lot 223, Ulster Bank Limited, £5, 1 March 1912. A nice example of a multibranch Ulster Bank £5.
Lots 246, and 247 are a pair of £100 notes dated 21.4.54, each GVF with lots of pin holes - unusual to see a pair of 1954 Redmond £100 notes in sequence.
The B Series and C Series notes feature a range of replacement note dates.

There is also a selection of notes from the Private Banks, the most interesting of which is probably Lot 165, an unusual design merchant's token for 13 Pence issued in Cork, probably in the late 1700s or early 1800s.
