Consolidated banknotes dates Changelog for irishpapermoney.com

Post by Mac »

The goal of the date listings is to record an image of a banknote of every date.

The date listings, a picture of each date of every denomination of CBN (Consolidated Banknotes) is in the
Ploughman notes view by date section of the web site.

Dates still needed

Consolidated notes
Leaving aside the 1940–41-dated Extraordinary Issue (EI) notes, very few of the Consolidated note dates remain to be recorded as follows:
Munster & Leinster
£1: 22.8.32 (added 04.2015)
Hibernian
£1: 1.5.34 (added 04.2015); £5: 13.9.39; £10: 24.7.39.
National
£1: 3.7.34 (added 04.2015); £5: 29.1.31 (added 02.2015), 16.9.39; £10: 5.12.31, 31.7.39.
Northern
£1: 9.10.39; £5: 15.9.39.
Provincial
£1: 5.9.36 (added 11.2016); £5: 19.9.39.
Royal
£5: 21.9.39.
Ulster
£5: 11.9.39.

Some of these (dates in green, above) were almost certainly never issued as they were part of the Extraordinary Issue (all the late 1939 dates). However, some Extraordinary Issue notes have appeared as follows: (Munster & Leinster £1, 6.2.40; £5, 22.9.39; Provincial £10, 17.7.39 (several in sequence) so others may do so in the future.

National 5 Pound added

Post by Mac »

National Bank 5 pound note, dated £5: 29.1.31 added.
The condition's not great, but this is one of the rarest dates in the Ploughman series, with only this note being known. I first recorded this note around 1994.

Added several notes to this section, as follows:
Hibernian: 1.5.34; 9.5.35, both rare dates with low printages.
National: 3.7.34 — I've had this scan for a while, forgot to add it before now!
Munster & Leinster: 24.8.32. Not a very good image, but it fills the gap until a better one comes along.

Of the remaining notes to be pictured, there is just one which falls into the 'normal' issue period, and thus should be out there.
Provincial £1: 5.9.36.

All the other notes not yet seen, with one exception fall by date into the Extraordinary Issue period, and were likely not issued. The exception is the National Bank £10 dated 5.12.31, an early date note which has never been recorded. Perhaps the National Bank just didn't need all the tenners that were printed for it, and the notes of this date remained unissued after the termination of the Consolidated Bank note issue.

Added a couple of image improvers.
At some stage I will scavenge the Ploughman Scan Survey dataset for improved images to use in the Dates section.
Might be a while yet though!

Added to the view by date section the last remaining banknote which falls into the 'normal' issue period, Provincial Bank of Ireland £1 5.9.36.
This completes the listing of expected dates, those which are known to have been issued.

Two examples of this date were submitted as a result of feedback from the PSS articles in Coin News.
