Did anyone ever get any reason for switching from the first half of the alphabet to the latter half? It seems to have been done at short notice. I have a good few packaging cards that had been prepared for the old prefixes then changed for the new ones. For example two £20 cards prepared as EBF and issued as SMP. Also ACF issued as VMP. £10 prepared as BCA and KBA issued as WMN and XMN.

That is interesting and looks like it happened in a hurry. I never did hear why. I wonder was it a measure to combat counterfeiting?

We never did come up with a reason for that.

In case you haven’t seen the packaging before, the crude red star on the card is put there by The Central Bank to indicate that the block had replacement notes in it.

Yes, we used to chase those stars in the old days of the C Series ;)

I’ve only just noticed that for the last issue of the £50 note when they changed the sec of the dept of finance to John Hurley they also changed his title from Runaí an Roinne Airgeadais to Ard-Runaí. 😳 Only took me 19 years to spot!

I wonder when the central bank changed its name to the central bank and financial services authority would it have sparked a note redesign if we still had Irish pounds at the time.

I'd say it would hove had to change its title on the notes in a similar fashion to the change from Currency Commission to Central Bank.

Would have been an awful mouthful on the front of the notes! I noticed that although the Secretary of the department of finance title changed to Secretary General half way through Paddy Mullarkeys term they didn't change it on the notes until John Hurley became Secretary.

Not to mention squeezing it onto the small panel on the reverse for the English bit.

They would have had to do a new set of plates for that. It would have created a nice extra Type in the series for us collectors, not to mention Specimens and Replacements to look for!

There didn’t seem to be any noticeable difference in the notes when they changed from Maurice Doyle to Maurice O’Connell unlike the B series where there was a noticeable Improvement in the quality of printing and a deterioration in the quality of the paper when it changed from O’Cofaigh to Doyle.

They changed to cheaper reverse printing in on the £10 and £20 notes dated in 1998, paper stayed good though.

I’ve also only just noticed, I’m really bored at the moment from lockdown, that they increased the spacing between the individual letters and numbers slightly when they moved to the second half of the alphabet for series numbers. The spacing had stayed exactly the same as on the B series when the C series was released.

Heh, you really are bored!
That is interesting though. I will dig out a pair of notes and an accurate ruler and have a look at that.

Does the £20 serial # need to be updated for attached below - UWV?

@Jenny007.
I just checked that, all prefixes MWV through to ZWV have been recorded, I have listed it incorrectly above, it should be:
£20: 09.12.99 • ZWV, no known hanging sequences, not MWV which is the start of the sequence.
Thanks for spotting this and querying it!
