Carlow Bank, Henry Macartney, ca. 1804-1813

Post by DOC »

Henry Macartney operated a private bank in Carlow in the early 1800’s. It is believed he took over as lead partner from John Bennett about 1804. Carlow Bank notes and post bills are rare and seldom offered for sale. A small group turned up recently at DNW and attracted much interest. The 1 Guinea & Half is the first recorded example of this denomination, scan attached.

Here is an intriguing note with title ‘Upton’ promising to ‘pay the bearer on demand for ....... of these ONE GUINEA in Cash or by a Dublin Bank Note at my office in Moneybeg’. So an interesting example of a fractional guinea issue. The note is believed to be associated with Upton House in the townland of Moneybeg in County Carlow. David La Touche IV of the famous banking family is known to have resided at Upton House in the early 1800’s but this does not explain the ‘JJ’ initials in the monogram.

A most unusual note, in the phraseology of the promise to pay!
Would a 'Dublin Bank Note' be a reference to a note of the Bank of Ireland, or a note of La Touche's bank perhaps.
