Solomon Watson & Co. Clonmel Bank. 1800-1809

Post by DOC »

Solomon Watson founded a bank in Clonmel in 1800 with John Watson and William Watson. The Watson’s were Quakers. The Bank went through 3 partnership changes before ceasing operation in 1809 following a series of private bank failures. It is believed that all creditors were paid in full. Solomon Watson subsequently became the Dublin agent for Gordon’s Belfast Bank as partner in Messrs. Watson & Law.

Here is an example of an unissued 6 Guineas note, an unusual high denomination most likely printed between 1800 and 1802.

Here is a 9 Shillings ‘Silver Note’ issued in ca.1804 with Solomon Watson and William Watson as partners. The grade is low but given the rarity, still highly collectable.

Catastrophically low grade, though still recognisable as a banknote!
And 9 shillings is a nice denomination to see.

Here is an unusual Half-a-Guinea note issued by Solomon Watson & Son in 1805. The other partner at the time was William Watson.

That is a wierd denomination for a bill. I have not seen a 1/2 Guinea bill before. Even the way it is written is odd - I would expect 'Half Guinea'

Here is a Clonmel Bank 5 Guineas note issued by Solomon Watson & Co. in the early 1800’s. The note is in poor condition and heavily toned. The date is illegible but it can be seen that the note is similar in design to the 6 Guineas note with the following 3 partners: Solomon Watson, John Watson and William Watson.
