Banker Reputed to be the Inspiration for Scrooge

Post by DOC »

Charles Dickens’ Scrooge is reputed to have been inspired by Gloucester banker James “Jemmy” Wood who was a notorious miser. The following link provides a fascinating account of the banker described as “the richest commoner in England”. Also attached is an example of a £5 note issued by James Wood in 1826 which was sold at noonans.co.uk in 2022. Cancelled notes of the bank appear at auction from time to time.
