Thomas Stoney was a landlord based at Arran Hill, Borrisokane, County Tipperary. He issued notes for use in the locality in the early 1800’s. Unissued 1 Guinea notes have been seen.

Notes of issuers of this type, if ever found issued, are more likely to be dated 1804 given the change of law that year that prohibited any notes under £1. This issuer took one step closer to actually issuing his notes - by getting them stamped. This example has a nice 6d stamp on it from the Dublin stamp office, with a portrait of George III.

Interesting point, the Arran Hill note has an intricately designed bank stamp, Type H, with portrait of George III. The amount for six pence seems high for a 1 Guinea note. In contrast, a 1 Guinea note of Deanagh Mills in Killarney from the same era has a Type C bank stamp with a duty of just 3 pence.
