The war years were officially termed “The Emergency” in the Republic of Ireland. During the period an Emergency Tracer Overprint Code was added to the basic A Series note design as an extra security measure to safeguard notes in transit to Ireland from England where they were printed.

There are 12 code variations for Currency Commission ETO code banknotes:
10/-: 3 codes, H; K; J
£1: 4 codes, T; B; P; V
£5: 3 codes, A; C; D
£10: 2 codes, E; F
