One date is known for Bank of Ireland £100 notes with the McGowan signature, namely, 1st March 2005. Specimen and standard issue notes are known and illustrated. Curiously, no replacement notes have been observed.

The McGowan £100 notes are the most recent £100 notes issued by Bank of Ireland and likely to be the last paper issue of this denomination. Should £100 notes be issued in future, they are likely to be polymer notes.

Here is an example of the last date of issue for the Queen’s University Series, a 22nd February 2007 £20 note. A nice feature is that this is also a number 1 note.

In 2008, Bank of Ireland introduced a new series of notes to mark the 400th anniversary of the granting of a license to distil whiskey to the area around Bushmills in 1608. The reverse of the £5, £10 & £20 notes now feature the Bushmills Distillery and all notes are dated, 20th April 2008. The first prefix is BD (for Bushmills Distillery) even though this was used on the previous series.

The £5 note bears the signature of David McGowan, Chief Executive U.K.

Standard issue, replacement and specimen notes are available to collectors. Examples of the standard issue and replacement £5 notes are attached.

The first Bushmills £10 notes also have the date, 20th April 2008, and start with prefix BD. The £10 notes have the signature of S. Kirkpatrick, Chief Executive Northern Ireland.

Standard issue, replacement and specimen notes are known. Replacement notes are scarce and seldom seen. An example of a standard issue note is shown, front and back.

The above replacement note looks like it has black serial numbers - a reduced colour scan I presume, and not a 'mulberry'!

When I get round to it, I will be adding a new Bank of Ireland section to the web site with all of these notes included.

Mac, that scan does suggest Mulberry serials on the replacement note. It is possible as some interesting print errors have been observed for this note. However, I attach a scan of a different note which appears to have standard red serial numbers.
