The Provincial Bank of Ireland created a new design for its 1929 Northern Ireland Issue.
Four denominations were issued.

Those 1929 Provincial Bank notes are scarce if not rare. I attach a scan of a £10 note.

Very nice to see the first note of a new series. Worth around £3,000, I'd say.

Nice find, it will be interesting to see if any higher denomination examples emerge.

Hmm, hammer was £4,600, making it over £5,000 including fees.

That's a nice example.
All of the 6.5.29 Provincial Bank Northern Ireland notes are rare, including the £1 note!

Here is a pic of a Provincial Bank of Ireland 20 Pounds 1929.

The notes of the First Northern Ireland Series have the denomination in solid print on the front panel. Here is an example of a £1 from the First Series, with the signature of F.S. Forde. The £1 notes of this type have a green front panel and a blue reverse.

The Provincial Bank also issued £10 notes as part of the First Series with the Forde signature. The notes are rare with one date issued in 1934, example attached.

The Provincial Bank also issued £20 notes in 1944 with the Kennedy signature. A curious feature is the retention of the original 1929 design, so these notes are considered to be part of the First Series.

The bank may well have had stocks of unused £20 notes remaining from the initial print run, though this would then suggest that the signature was a later addition to the printing process - have to look at some notes and see if the position of the signature varies on the note.

Yes, I had a similar thought that the continuation of the old design was related to use of old note stocks. However, the 1943 and 1944 £20 notes with the Kennedy signature differ from the 1929 notes by having the printers imprint on the reverse. An image of a 1929 note with no printers imprint is attached for comparison.

A possible explanation for no change in design could be the desire to avoid the costs associated with a new design. There was a limited requirement for this denomination and the the next £20 notes were not issued until 1981.

The Provincial Bank modified the designs for their 2nd Northern Ireland Series with modifications to the front panel and the colour of the reverse. The first £1 notes of the 2nd Series were issued in 1935 with the signature F.S. Forde. The colour of the front panel remains unchanged but the £1 is now in outline, rather than solid green. The reverse colour was changed from blue to green. An example of a £1 dated 1st Aug. 1935 is attached.
