The highest denomination issued with the McClay signature in 1977 was the £10. Standard issue, replacement and various types of specimen notes are known. The reverse features the sinking of the Girona in 1588, a warship of the Spanish Armada. Examples of a specimen and standard issue note are shown.

In 1979, the signatory on the Provincial Bank of Ireland notes changed to F.H.H. Hollway. Images of of the standard issue and replacement £1 notes are attached for comparison. The Bank used the prefix ‘ZY’ for its replacement notes. The 1979 notes were the last £1 notes issued with the bank title ‘Provincial Bank of Ireland’.

The Provincial Bank also issued £5 notes in 1979 with the Hollway signature, the last £5 notes issued with the bank title ‘Provincial Bank of Ireland’. Standard issue, replacement, specimen and proof notes are known. Here is an example of a standard issue and a partial proof note in monochrome

The Provincial Bank also issued £10 notes in 1979 with the Hallway signature. A £10 note with the Hallway signature was subsequently issued in 1981, the last £10 note issued with the bank title ‘Provincial Bank of Ireland’. Standard issue, replacement, specimen and proof notes are known. Here are examples of standard issue notes (1979 & 1981) and a partial proof note in monochrome. Replacement £10 notes appear to be rare.

After a gap of almost 40 years, The Provincial Bank of Ireland issued a £20 note in 1981. This was the last £20 note issued by the bank with the title ‘The Provincial Bank of Ireland’ and bears the Hallway signature. Standard issue, specimen and proof notes are known but no replacement notes have been observed to date.

Interesting to see a special prefix, AA, on the proof.
I wonder if the prefixes used on the proofs might have identified the stage of development of the note, or if they had no significance.

Yes, it seems that the prefix on the proof note was added at the final stage along with the date. Here are examples of earlier stage proofs without date or prefix. A number of interesting stage proofs were released by the bank from their archives in two charity auctions at Noonans in 2020.

The Provincial Bank also issued a £100 note in 1981, the first for many years and the last with the bank title ‘Provincial Bank of Ireland’. The note bears the signature of F.H Hollway, manager of the main branch in Belfast. Standard issue, specimen and proof notes are known but no replacement notes have been observed to date. Here is an example of a standard issue note. These notes are very scarce, particularly in high grade.

Here are examples of proof and specimen £100 notes from 1981. The £20 and £100 notes of 1981 were the last issued by the bank with the title ‘Provincial Bank of Ireland’. The bank changed its name to Allied Irish Banks in 1982 and continued issuing notes of similar design with this new title.
