Northern Bank missing signature

Post by callahiljo »

This £10 note dated 1 Jan 1940 should have been hand signed - four different signatures are recorded in PMI. This example (currently on ebay) has no signature at all - genuinely unsigned or over-vigorously washed??

I think I see the faint outline of the residue of the signature, washed out, just below the RN of Northern.

There also appears to be light staining in the signature area consistent with ink smudging. This is more easily seen at higher contrast.

Thanks. My gut feel is that the note has been washed, yet the corners seem sharp. They usually go a bit fuzzy after a wash (so I'm told!)
