INDEX of the PRIVATE BANKS

Post by The Governor »

We have enough banks listed now to warrant an index, which I have arranged alphabetically according to the names of the banks as listed.
New entries for banks will be added as they are posted.

Suggestions as to how to improve the Index are welcome, for example possibly listing all the banks in a particular town or city together? I know little about the Private Banks, so would be guided by those with a better knowledge of their study.

Re: Index of the Private Banks

Post by DOC »

While it is probably easiest to arrange the index alphabetically, I think it would be more interesting to arrange it by county. This would also help to provide some insight into the history of these banks as the failure of a bank generally affected the town, city or region where it was located.

A nice feature of the Forum is that knowledge builds up over time. However, in hindsight, it would probably have been better to adopt a systematic approach for the naming of the private banks. Here is one possible approach.

The name of the bank is that of the lead partner followed by the bank name or the bank location given on the note. Examples as follows:
o John Joyce & Co., Galway Bank.
o Alexander Boyle & Co., Dublin.
o William Alexander & Co., Dublin.
o George Maunsell & Co., Bank of Limerick.
o Thomas Maunsell & Co., Bank of Limerick.

We could easily alter the titles of each post to this format. It ought to make it easier to look them up.
This is a work in progress, the idea being build up a database of notes, and to sort out things like the most logical way to list the banks before creating the section for them in the main website.

Hey, this index is a good idea, makes it easy to find stuff.
Doc suggestions are good. Maybe consider 2 versions of the index, one alphabetic by bank and the other by County.
I see the value of listing by name, but I figure the precedent is to state sometimes the town first, like Waterford Bank followed by the partner names. Or should we start our own way of doing things here?

Also we should think of the order of creation of the banks when several banks are run by the same partners, chronology here should override alphabetic order. And how to arrange Ffrench's Bank in the County listing, with an office in Dublin and Tuam.

Ah, feedback!

We will do this, in alphabetical order:

and see how it looks then.

I think it is a good approach to try out some ideas. The Index and underlying structure can be modified over time. Ffrench’s Bank is unusual in having more than one location for its notes. The Tuam notes and Dublin notes could be connected by the use of links. This approach could also be used to connect the notes of Thomas Ffrench & Co. and Charles Ffrench & Co.

Index by town added.
Can someone who knows more about these banks let me know what town or city the Ross Bank was based in? I don't see it on the bank notes.

Great job, that provides a nice overview :)

Ross Bank was based in New Ross, Co. Wexford.

Btw, Belfast should be Co.Antrim,
Riall's Bank was based in Clonmel, Co.Tipperary although the spelling on the notes is odd: Clonmell.
