Drogheda Bank William Hughes & Co. ca. 1804

Post by DOC »

Here is an attractively designed ‘silver note’ for 6 Shillings issued by Drogheda Bank in 1804. Little is known about the bank which was operated by sole partner William Hughes. It is the only private bank known to have operated in Co. Louth. The note makes reference to an office at No.1 Lurgan Street, Dublin. The format of the serial number (A 6/28) is unusual for such an early note.

Unusual also in that it refers to an Act of Parliament in its payment promise.

It seems that this reference to an Act of Parliament in the payment promise was used on ‘Silver Notes’ for denominations less than £1, although not all ‘Silver Notes’ have this statement. The Act probably refers to the one introduced in 1797 to permit issue of these notes. Another Act of 1805 terminated the right to issue these notes.
