William Murphy of Killarney issued silver notes during the Restriction Period to make up for the shortage of small change. Murphy is reputed to have been a saddler by trade and did not register as a banker. Small note issue by merchants and traders was a common feature of the time given the necessity for small change to facilitate business transactions.

Here are examples of small denomination notes issued by William Murphy in 1797 for 6½d (1 British Sixpence) and 1s 1d (1 British Shilling).

Yes, there were a number of note issuers in Killarney in the late 1700's and early 1800's. It would be good to include them all in this string.

Here are additional examples of Silver notes issued by William Murphy, Killarney, in 1797. One is for 1 Shilling Seven Pence Halfpenny Irish (1/14th Guinea), the other for 3 Shillings British (1/7th Guinea). The 3 Shillings British denomination equates to 3 Shillings 3 Pence Irish (3s 3d), a denomination seldom seen.

The Ross Island Mining Company, Killarney, issued notes in the early 1800’s. The history of mining for copper in the area is fascinating and dates back to prehistoric times. The commencement of mining on an industrial scale began in the early 1800’s when Colonel Robert Hall set up The Ross Island Mining Company with 13 partners in 1804. Here are some links providing further background.

A silver note for 6 British Shillings (6s 6d Irish) is known from the early days of the mining operation. The note appears to be undated but the year is most likely 1804.

Captain William White took over the operations of the mine in 1811 under a new lease granted by Lord Kenmare. A second note issue is known associated with William White.

Here are examples of issued and unissued notes for 3 Guineas. The notes are payable in Cork. The issued note provides the location of the Cork office as the house of Thomas Long Esq. The name William White appears in scrolling text at the left side of the note.

The main website page is underway for these Killarney issues. Quite a lot of notes have survived compared to the issues of other towns.

Here is an attractive unissued example of a Deanagh Mills, Killarney, 1 Guinea note. These notes would have been issued by the mill owner, Christopher Galwey, in the early 1800’s. There is a separate string on the Forum for the Deanagh Mills notes but I am including it here as part of the Killarney issuers.
