Irish Papermoney.com Changelog. Version 2.3.n to v3.0.0 SLEP 4 upgrade to https

Post by Mac »

SLEP 4 Additions and changes to the main website will go here.
SLEP 4 Overal progress: 85% - https Status: Active as of 11.05.21

This will be a major upgrade of the engineering of the website. Service Life Extension Program upgrade 4 will be a relatively quick operation, and should be completed within 3 months.

The website will be migrated from http to https, triggering a version change up to 3.0.0.
This will cause almost all of the image links in the forum to break. We will speedily relink them all manually, but some disruption will occur. The forum may be taken off-line for a short while.

The change will also cause all google links and other search engine links to break, and all links into the website from other websites to break.
Google will generate a report on this, and fixes will be made based on that report.
Other unforeseen disruption to the main website might also occur.

The site depth will be reduced to a maximum of 5 levels.
Web pages through to level 4 will be modernised for current browsers and search engines.
Images in level 2 and level 3 will be improved in quality. Some of these images date from 1999 and were optimised for dial-up modem speeds at the expense of quality, which is no longer a priority.

Change Phases
Phase One will go live with all of the affected pages being changed in one upgrade.
Phase two will then follow on immediately.

Phase One: Started 01.03.21 — completed 02.05.21. 100%
Adjustments to 574 pages in the top three levels of the website and upgrade of all old images on these pages.
• Site depth reduction to a maximum of 5 levels. Started 01.03.21 — completed 05.03.21. 100%
• Modernisation of web pages through to level 4 for current browsers and search engines. Includes upgrade of SEO. Started 01.03.21 — completed 19.04.21. 100% complete.

Phase Two: 100% complete.
• Migration of website from http to https. 100% complete.
• Fixing of broken links in forum as a result of http to https migration. 100% complete.

Phase Three: 100% complete.
• Fixing of broken external incoming links by means of redirection scripts. 100% complete.

Phase Four: Started 02.05.21 20% complete.
• Adjustment of site pages to be compatible with viewing on mobile phones and tablets. 20% complete.

Progress update:
Search engine friendliness upgrades are nearly complete. When this is added to the website there will probably be no noticeable difference for the visitors! However, bing and google will like it.

Improvement of the images on level 1 and level 2 pages is nearly complete.
The original scans from 1999-2000 were retained as lossless .tif files and are available for reuse now, much quicker than rescanning items, many of which are not readily available.
These .tif files have now been resaved as .jpg files with better quality than that currently on the website. It is quite interesting to see the improvement in Photoshop’s .jpg creation process since ca2000. The existing jpg files were created using Photoshop 2.5 or 3.0, and have now been recreated in Photoshop 12.

Replacement notes and Error notes remain to be upgraded.
These improved images will be added to the site during the upgrade process to version 3.0.0.

Progress update:
https was activated a few minutes ago :geek: :)

A major update of all the site content will occur in a few minutes, which will bring irishpapermoney.com to version 3.0.0

Next steps are debugging and fixing any broken intrasite links. So far it is working better than I had anticipated.
Please report any broken pages.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Some debugging going on currently, so the board will be offline periodically over the next few days.

Submitting site changes to bing and google.

Apart from any unforseen issues, the migration from http to https has been completed.

Modification of the main pages of the site so that they will display better on mobiles is now underway.

This is actually not as difficult as I thought it might be. A single line of code tells the mobile what to do with the page. After that we just need to make the page fit on the mobile display so that text is legible. A bit of fun there.

Alteration of pages to talk to mobiles is nearly complete.
Firefox web browser released an update a few days ago which slightly broke one of the site navigation tools, so had to fix that. This is the first time a web browser upgrade has altered the way in which pages display!
