Two Lavery notes with the same serial number :)

This pair of notes have been known for a long time, first noted in Irish Numismatics about 30 years ago.

Currency Commission One Pound 1941 & Central Bank of Ireland One Pound 1976 with same number 79L 022412

Possibly the highest denomination note ever issued by an Irish bank.
Bank of Ireland 500 Pounds, 1869.

Print errors are interesting too!

EDIT:
A Lavery cutting error—my favourite kind of error note.

Lots more Irish errors on irishpapermoney.com, in the section on Irish error banknotes.

This is the only Ploughman error note I have ever seen or heard of.
Red serial numbers are missing.

Lavery £1 Notes Same Serial Number and Date

Post by DOC »

Here is an interesting example of two Lady lavery £1 notes from 1967 with the same serial number and date. The notes appear to be genuine.

@DOC Welcome to the forum!
Interesting indeed.
Hmm. I wonder how that could happen. It might be that one of them could be a replacement for an error on 777886 or 777885, which was set with the wrong number, in error.

Here's a serious rarity, an error on a replacement note :D
A printed fold, causing the date to appear on the back of the note when unfolded. I wonder if this replacement was itself replaced.

Austrian note

Post by Mac »

This Austrian 1000 Gulden note from 1841 bears an interesting resemblance to Bank of Ireland notes of the same era. The BoI design first appeared in 1838.

Bank of Ireland One Pound 1943. Northern Ireland issue.

Here's an interesting note I came across recently. It is a Bank of Ireland Pound signed by Adams, which has been counter-signed by Chestnutt and Guthrie, who were both later signatories of the BoI notes (Chestnutt,1960s; and Guthrie, 1970s).

This £20 C Series note from 1997 was recently offered for sale on a well known auction site. It is a striking double print error. At first sight, I thought I needed to adjust my glasses :)

It fetched what to my mind was a nice price too at €250, so it seems to have enjoyed decent support (albeit from a handful of bidders).

I've not seen a print errors such as this one before on a C Series note so I'm guessing they're relatively few and far between.

Definitely a nice and interesting addition to any collection!

Here are a pair of Lady Lavery notes sold recently at the The Whytes Eclectic Collector 9/18 Auction. The 10 shillings and £1 notes are unremarkable apart from the fact that they are autographed by Dr. T.K. Whitaker, former Secretary of the Department of Finance and Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland. He was once voted Irishman of the 20th century. The pair of notes sold for a hammer price of 280 euro which is considerably more than their value without the signature.

I was bidding on this lot... Didn't win it unfortunately.

Indeed, a nice pair of notes to see turning up.
I haven't seen any autographed by Whitaker before. I wonder if he did many.

I suspect that he did not sign many. It would be good to hear if anyone has any other examples.
