1928 Lavery notes

Post by billyf1 »

I’m not sure this warrants a whole topic by itself, but here is a £5 note from 1928.

I don’t see them often at all, myself.

If you have any other examples of these early date notes, I’d love to see them.

Nice note. It appears to be part of a short run. Here is the previous number !

That's brilliant! Does that note have pinholes too (not that it would bother anyone too much - but would be interesting if they were stored together for some time). Interesting and funny that they're in sequence!

Sold to me by a chap in Spain.

Not sure about the pinholes as I don't own the note :)

The first date, 10.9.28, is also sought after by collectors.
Difficult to obtain in high grade. The example attached is interesting as it bears the first prefix, T/01.

There is a small run in sequence of the 23.10.28 fivers with the two pin holes.
I have one in my own set, and a scan of at least one other example. I'll dig out pics of both and post them.
They are nice examples of the note, among the best I have seen for the date.

There is also a small sequential run of 10.9.28 fivers in AU-UNC condition, without pin holes. At least one of them has been pressed (can't imagine why some cretin would press an AU grade note), and another example which has mulberry serials is a fresh original note.

Here are two of the 10.9.28 notes.
T04 009005 has been washed and ironed.
T04 009001 is probably ok as its corners appear to be slightly grubby.

I'll have to look for the scans of the other notes.

£5 note 23.10.28, number 067909. this note was in a US auction in 2007.
It is (or was then) a fresh original example.

That looks like a really nice fresh note.

Interesting to hear that you have observed a 1928 £5 with mulberry serials. That is an unusual and rare note !

This looks like the note that I have. I.e. the very same one. The links to the 2007 auction would hardly exist today?
Thanks!

Heh, I didn't notice that it was your one!
It was likely in Heritage Auctions or Lynn Knight back in 2007.

Lady Lavery banknotes were first introduced in 1928 and as such the 1928 dates are very popular with collectors. Two dates are known for the 10 Shillings notes, 10.9.28 and 23.10.28, both with fractional prefix. Here is a nice example of a first date, first prefix (A/01) 10 Shillings note which adds further to the collector interest.

Here is an example of a Lady Lavery 10 shillings note with the date, 23.10.28. This second date of the Series appears to be of higher scarcity than the first date, 10.9.28.

If you are looking for an example of a 1928 Lady Lavery note, the £1 denomination is probably the most affordable. The prefix range for the first date, 10.9.28, is H/01 to H/30. The first prefix seldom turns up for sale and is very difficult to obtain.

That's a nice pair of 10.9.28 £1 notes!

Here is £5 note 23.10.28, number T/09 067910. That gives us three in sequence: 067908; 67909; 067910.

I am always curious about notes with running serial numbers. Were the notes kept for several years in a bank vault or were they hoarded by someone in a biscuit tin? Notes from runs are likely to have seen little circulation so their condition is likely to be good. Here is another example of a 1928 £5 which could potentially be part of a run extending from T/09 067909 to T/09 067919 !

This is consistent with what I heard way back in the early 1990s, a run of ten or so notes, all with the two pin holes in the portrait!
They do remain among the best examples known of 23.10.28 £5 notes. A nice one to get.

Here is an example of the second 1928 date for the Lady Lavery £1 notes. The prefix range for the second date, 23.10.28, is H/31 to H/60. It is difficult to obtain a high grade example of this date probably due to the fact that most people would have retained an example of the first date in preference.

Only one 1928 date was issued for the £10 notes, 10.9.28. The prefix range for this date is V/01 to V/05. This note is very difficult to obtain in nice grade. An example with prefix V/01 is attached.

I have seen just one AU grade 1928 £10 note. Generally, the best grade available is GVF, of which there are a few examples that I have seen.

Only one 1928 date was issued for the £20 notes, 10.9.28. The printage figure for this denomination was low with only one prefix X/01. The 1928 £20 note is rare and seldom seen. Interesting to see an example for sale in next week’s DNW Irish Banknotes auction.
