About the Private Banknotes section

This section is devoted to note issues of Irish Private Banks which issued banknotes prior to the creation of Joint Stock banks in Ireland. Irish Private Banks were generally small and were restricted to six partners or less, thus limiting their usefulness to the economy.

Most of these banks went bust, and few remained beyond 1833. Some of the more successful Private Banks merged to from joint stock banks after 1835.

The area of Irish Private banks is still in need of a lot of research.
This section is devoted to collating the knowledge about them.

Will there be a section on your web site on the Private banks any time soon?
Theres nothing out there on the web about them, except bits from on auction sites. It'd be cool to have a proper site on them.

Once I have enough to start a section on the Private Banks I will do one. There is a gap for it on the Map Page!
I might start with those banks where many of the notes have survived, such as Gibbons & Williams, and grow it from there.

I have a suggestion regarding how the private banks should be listed. I think it would be more logical to name them for their partners first rather than for the towns and cities they operated in, mainly for clarity because some towns had several different banks. Thoughts?

I think your suggestion has merit as there are a number of different partnerships for say 'Bank of Galway' or 'Bank of Cork'. To categorise the Private Banknotes in a manageable way, it could also be useful to group partnerships under County.

When Paper Money of Ireland 2nd edition comes out we will have a fuller record of these early private banks. Lots of research has been done since the 1st edition came out! Book ready later this year (2021!) all being well.

The 1st edition of Paper Money of Ireland is my go-to reference for the Irish private banks. Great to hear that a 2nd edition is imminent !
