I recently came across an image of a Limerick Soviet 1 Shilling note which looked superficially like it might be numbered 31, which would have made it new to the census.
However, the 1 is added by hand. And the note pictured is actually an altered picture of note No 3.
Number 3 of the One Shilling note is in the census. Both images are pictured below. The '31' note may have been defaced for use in a publication, having been 'sampled' from another publication. I can't think of another reason for altering an image of the note.
It does demonstrate the necessity of verifying images of significant banknotes when they are discovered.

Very interesting observation. I do hope that it is only the image that was defaced ! It is a watch out to be alert for altered banknote images.
