Judy magazine, enamel Badge ca1868

Post by Mac »

A board member recently sent me details and pictures of another Victorian enamel badge featuring a publication of the time.

Judy magazine, a companion to Punch magazine, is also referred to as the London Serio-Comic Journal and was founded in 1867. The pin references volume 3, which dates to 1868. A digital copy of Judy magazine volumes 3-4 is available online.

The back of the pin includes the Depose mark and the maker's mark: GV & Co. This mark is generally attributed to: Gourdel, Valès & Co. - Paris & London A post on a silver forum notes: "This business was started in France in 1827 by Constant Valès at 161, Rue St Martin, Paris. They were exhibitors at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862. A London branch was established in 1857 under the style of Gourdel, Valès & Co. importing gold and silver jewellry, mostly from France and Austria."
