May 2022 auctions, lots of Ploughmans on offer

Post by Mac »

Good buying opportunities are to be had this month for collectors interested in Ploughman notes. Auctions are generally the best place to start building a collection, or to fill one out with general notes.

There are three auctions with significant offerings of Irish notes in them this month. Noonan's (formerly DNW), Whyte's, and Mullens. All of them have some Ploughman notes on offer, amounting to a total of £40 fave value in previously unrecorded notes, out of a total of £187 in face value on offer, plus a Specimen £100 note.

Noonan's presents Part 3 of Gus Mac Amhlaigh's collection which includes a range of Ploughmans, along with other notes which includes a further offering of Ploughman notes. Total face value is £96, plus a specimen £100 note.

Whyte's sale has £85 fave value, including four £10 notes.

Mullen's sale includes £6 in one pound notes.

The £100 Ploughman is presumably just a page from a De La Rue salesman specimen book to show prospective clients, and not an official Currency Commission issued banknote. Do any of these Irish specimen books exist intact?

You are correct. This note is from a Specimen book.

This particular note turned up in an intact Specimen book. It was in an auction in the 1990s, along with examples of the other Ploughman denominations except the £1.

There were many other specimens in the book also, of examples of notes from other countries - I still have the auction catalogue somewhere, might dig it out sometime.
