DNW Auction of Paper Money
Thursday 26 August 2021. British, Irish and World Banknotes

This auction continues DNW’s trend of offering a very good selection of Irish notes.

The sale has 72 Lots of Irish notes, and includes some very seldom seen rarities.

Some of the highlights.
There is a good range of notes from the Joint Stock banks, with some very rarely seen items, starting with two exceptional items from Bank of Ireland.
Lot 220, Bank of Ireland, £5, 27 January 1919. Est £8,000. The green branch fiver! There are three examples of this note recorded, with this one being the best grade by far. First seen in a dealer’s list in 1982, then in DNW around ten years ago.
Lot 221, Bank of Ireland, £1, 10 April 1922, serial number 10A 000002, Hinton signature. Est, £1,600. this is one of two notes retained by Hinton. Last seen in Whytes a few years ago.
Lot 235, Belfast Banking Company Limited, proof £1, ND (1908-10) - a rare example of a later Belfast note in proof form, seldom seen. Est £240. A nice opportunity to obtain a high grade example of a Belfast Bank note, issued notes seldom turn up in VF or better.
Lot 239, National Bank Limited, £1, 1 August 1919 in EF grade. This is the only known example of a small size National note in high grade. It is by far the nicest example known, and a rare note by type. Est £2,600.
Lot 240, National Bank Limited, £5, 5 October 1925 in VF grade. An unusually nice grade example of a National fiver. Usually these notes grade around VG to fine. Est £2,600.
Lot 254, Provincial Bank of Ireland Ltd, cancelled £1, 1 January 1918. An interesting banknote, it is the last date for the large size Provincial £1 notes. Prefix V was reduced in size. Est £100.
Lot 255, Provincial Bank of Ireland Ltd, £3, 3 May 1905, serial number 10069. There are four of these blue £3 notes known, one is in the British Museum (grade unknown), and a second example is cut and rejoined. This example is the best of the three available to collectors. Est £4,000. Last seen in Whytes around 20 years ago.
Lot 259, Provincial Bank of Ireland Ltd, £10, 10 November 1944, serial number N73218. GVF. Examples of this note are seldom sen in nice grade, with most struggling to reach VF. This note is a nice original. Est £150 - it will likely do better than that.
Lot 264, Ulster Bank Limited, £1, 1 December 1924, serial number 105506, manuscript Reid signature. A solid VF Est £2,600. For many years the £5 note of this type were only know in proof form. Then two issued notes turned up, possibly from the same source. A very rare issue.

There are three Ploughman notes, Lot 268, Northern Bank £10, Lot 269, Royal Bank £1, and Lot 270, Ulster Bank £1.
Lot 268, Currency Commission, Northern Bank Ltd, £10, 6 May 1929, serial number 01 0T 007335.
This is one of the mid-range examples of the Northern tenner. Currently there are seven examples known of the note. Est £12,000. This note was last sold in Whytes around 15 years ago.
Lot 270, Currency Commission, Ulster Bank, £1, 24 August 1932. A decent example of an Ulster pound. Est £300 - it will do better than that.

The Legal Tender Notes section starts with some pre-production proofs of the 1938 Currency Commission Ireland notes:
Lot 271, 272, 274 are 10 Shilling, £5, and £10 respectively.
Lot 275, Central Bank of Ireland, 10 Shillings, 12 December 1945, serial number O1J 013341. One of only two examples known of this rare key date, the lower grade example. Fine. Est £1,000.

Later notes:
Lot 287 Central Bank of Ireland, C Series replacement £100, 1996, AAK 000009, Est £1,000
Lot 288 Central Bank of Ireland, C Series replacement £100, 1996, KKK 000009, Est £1,000
Standard issue C Series notes of the first prefix with numbers below 000010 are seldom offered, as they tended to be retained. All replacement notes went into circulation.

Mention has to be made of Lot 503.
Oriental Bank Corporation, Hong Kong, $5, 1 June 1860, serial number 20465. This is the earliest known fully issued banknote of any denomination for Hong Kong. Est £30,000-£50,000.

Noonan's Auction of Paper Money
24 & 25 November 2022. Banknotes

Noonan’s Mayfair have another superb range of world notes on offer in their November sale which includes many rarities. Ireland features prominently with several very rare notes on offer. The catalogue is available from their website, www.noonans.co.uk.

There are some exceptionally rare offerings among the Irish banknotes in this sale from the joint stock banks, including a Bank of Ireland £5 note, Baskin with four lines of branches, the first time that such a £5 note has been offered on the market.

Two other notes on offer: Northern Banking Company £1, 1866; National Bank £3, 1891, are all the only known surviving issued examples of their type; and Ulster Banking Company, £1, 1861 is the only known example in private hands.

There is a nice spread of Ploughman notes in decent VF grade or better, including a Royal Bank of Ireland £10 note in GEF, part of a run of four known examples.

There are also some exceptional offerings among the non-Irish notes.

Some of the highlights are listed following.

Ireland

Irish Private Banks
Lot 214. Arran Hill, unissued £1 and 2 Shillings and 9 Pence, 18- (ca 1804). Est £400-£500.
In Borris a Kane, this issuer is unrecorded in PMI or any other reference catalogue.
Lot 221. Mallow Bank, De la Cour, Galwey, unissued 1 Shilling and 1 penny (13 pence). Est £400-£500.
A very unusual denomination.

Irish Joint stock banks, pre-1928

Lot 228. Bank of Ireland, £5, 12 December 1905. Est £3,000-£4,000.

Lot 238. National Bank, £3, 3 December 1891. Est £7,000-£9,000.

Lot 239. National Bank, £5, 5 November 1919. Est £5,000-£7,000.

Lot 243. Northern Banking Company, £1, 1 August 1866. Est £7,000-£9,000.
Then only known example of an issued Northern Banking Company note.

Lot 263. Provincial Bank of Ireland, £3, 3 October 1905. Est £4,000-£5,000.

Lot 264. Provincial Bank of Ireland, £1, 1 July 1921. VF Est. £600-£800. A nicer than usual example of the type.

Lot 305. Ulster Banking Company, £1, January 1861. Est £6,000-£8,000.
The only known example, without BELFAST in bottom border, in private hands.

Lot 307. Ulster Bank Ltd., £5, 1 August 1894. Est £1,800-£2,400.

Ploughman notes 1929-1941
There are ten £1 notes, five £5 notes and four £10 notes on offer.

Lot. 321. Munster & Leinster Bank £10, 6.5.29, a decent VF. Est £1,200-£1,800.
Lot. 331. Royal Bank of Ireland £10, 6.5.29, About EF. Est £8,000-£10,000.
This note is from a run of at least four in sequence, recorded in the Ploughman Scan Survey.

A range of Lavery Legal Tender Notes, including two lower grade Brennan/McElligott £20 notes (1950, 1951).

Lot. 368. $10 De Valera bond, 21 January 1920.
It will be interesting to see what this fetches, De Valera Bonds are a popular item of memorabilia.

The strong British Isles section also has many other interesting notes, including the following:

Lot. 419. Arbroath Banking Company, £1, 1 September 1825.
Lot. 421. Montrose Banking Company, 1 Guinea, manuscript date 7 August 1818.
These two towns are quite close to each other, just above Dundee.

Lot. 455. Isle of Man Bank, £1, 22 June 1829. £2,000-£2,600.
Lot. 459. Bank of Mona, £1 British, 14 September 1874. £2,000-£2,600.

Lot. 491. Lancashire & Yorkshire Bank Limited, £1, 12 November 1925. £1,500-£2,6000.
This is a very rare note, a forerunner to the Martin's Bank issues.

Two of the exceptional items from among the World Notes.
Lot. 862. East African Currency Board, specimen 10,000 Shillings, 1 August 1951. Est £15,000-£18,000.
Lot. 1188. Government Of The Straits Settlements, $1, 1 September 1906. Est £10,000-£14,000.

The Arran Hill note (lot 214) does get a mention in PMI 2nd edition on page 125, ref TR 11. It's also in the index on pages 29 and 31. The Tradesman issues are in alphabetical order of town of issue. We added a revised and more detailed index of both private bank and tradesman issues, with cross-referencing where necessary.

Noonan's Auction of Paper Money
1 & 2 March 2023. Banknotes

The first banknote sale of 2023 consists of 1111 lots, which include 182 lots of Irish notes, broken into two sections. First are 38 lots from the Bruce Smart collection, followed by 144 lots in the general section.
The catalogue is available from their website.

Prices for Irish notes have been consistently strong over the past two years, especially for rare and higher grade items.
There are some very nice grade Irish notes in this sale, and it will be interesting to see how well they do pricewise. The range of modern notes is also quite broad, with examples of almost every type of Currency Commission and Central Bank of Ireland issue on offer, as well as a good range of Northern Ireland issues.

Some of the notes in the sale are featured following.

There are notes from all eight banks of the Ploughman series, as well as a specimen £20 (Lot 403, see following) and two De La Rue specimens in non-standard colours, Lot 59, £10 (Est £2200-£2800), and Lot 60, £20 (Est £3200-£3800).

Lot 62. Hibernian Bank, £1, 4 May 1939, graded UNC 64. Est £3000-£3600.
Lot 67. Northern Bank, £1, 7 January 1931, serial number, graded VF 35. Est £3200-£3800.
Lot 69. Provincial Bank, £10, 2 October 1931, serial number, graded UNC 63. Est £12000-£16000. [I think this is far too high!]

There is a nice range of Northern Ireland notes in higher grades.
Some nice grade examples of National Bank notes are on offer, which are seldom seen in high grades.

Lot 52. The National Bank Limited, £1, 2 October 1939, graded at 66, looks to be UNC. Est £700-£900.
Lot 54. The National Bank Limited, £5, 1 January 1949, graded at 53 AU. Est £1500-£2000. [This might be a bit high]

There are some nice examples of high grade Lavery £50 and £100 notes which will test the market for these notes in various grades of AU-UNC (55-66).
Lot 75. £100 1959, AU 55, Est £1500-£2000.
Lot 78. £100 1973, UNC 66, Est £2400-£3000.
Lot 79. £100 1975, UNC 64, Est £1000-£1500.
Lot 82. £50 1977, UNC 66, Est £2200-£2800.
Lot 420. £50 1947, Nice EF, Est £1500-£2000.
Lot 429. £50 1977, AU 55, Est £1000-£1500.
Lot 430. £100 1977, UNC 66, Est £1000-£1500.

The market for B Series £50 notes in high grade will also be tested with four lots 434, 435, 436, 437, all graded 65 or 66, and carrying estimates of £360-£420 each.

A selection of C Series notes includes Lot 443. Central Bank of Ireland, £100, 22 August 1996, UNC 66, Est £650-£750. This will test the C Series £100, a common denomination, but difficult to obtain in UNC 66 or better.

The Irish Private banks are represented by a nice selection of all the known denominations issued by Roche’s Bank, Cork in the early 1800s.
Lot 312, 3 Guineas, 1 December 1818, VG-Fine. Est £400-£500 is a nice example.
Lot 315, Robert Woodcock, Enniscorthy, 9 Shillings, 29 January 1801. Est £500-£700 is an interesting example of a lesser-known denomination.

Among the second group of Ploughman notes is Lot 403, a Currency Commission, Bank of Ireland, specimen £20. AU grade. Est £15000-£18000. This is an interesting offering, the first example of a £20, £50, or £100 specimen to be offered since the very high prices achieved last year at Noonan’s for these notes.

The Irish section is completed by a range of Fenian bonds, Lots 447 to 451.
Lot 449 is the most interesting, $50 larger type which is seldom seen, Est £300-£400.

The Ballykinlar token is considerably rarer than the Fenian bonds and should attract good attention from interested bidders.

Banknotes are Lots 572 - 607.

Noonan's Auction of Paper Money
31 May & 1 June 2023. Banknotes

Noonan’s Mayfair auction of world banknotes has 1386 Lots up for sale which includes some highly desirable notes from around the world.
There are 173 Lots of Irish banknotes, with a strong offering of Ploughman notes. Also on offer are three Limerick Soviet notes, one of each denomination. The catalogue is available online at noonans.co.uk

Highlights of the sale include the following Lots of Irish notes.

Irish private banks
Lot 193. Ffrench’s Bank, Dublin, for Honble Sir Thos Ffrench, Bart Michl Morris, Willm Keary & Chas Ffrench, unissued £1, 14 Shillings & 1 1/2 Pence. Est. 300-£400.
A banknote for One Guinea and a Half. [Previously sold at noonans (as DNW) in 2009].
Lot 201. Gibbons & Williams, Dublin, unissued £5, 1 September 1833. Est £400-£500.
This note is interesting in that it has ‘Johnston & Co.’ inscribed in the signature panel, and might have been issued by the London agents of the bank. Johnston & Co., London acted as agents in London for some of the Irish banks.
Lot 203. Hannyingtons Bank, for Thomas Hannyington, 1 Guinea (1 Pound, 2 Shillings and 9 Pence), 9 October 1812. Est. £300-£400. [ex noonans.co.uk, 28 March 2019, Lot 290].

Irish joint stock banks
Lot 254. Provincial Bank of Ireland Ltd, £20, 6 May 1929. Est. £1,200-£1,800. This note is gVF or better and one of the nicest examples extant. A rare note in nice grade, it should do well.

Limerick Soviet
An example of each of the three denominations is on offer. All of the notes are in nicer condition.
Lot 278. Limerick ‘Soviet’ Trades & Labour Council, 1 Shilling, April 1919, serial number 185. AU. Est. £2,000-£2,600
Lot 279. Limerick ‘Soviet’ Trades & Labour Council, 5 Shillings, April 1919, serial number 117. GEF. Est. £2,000-£2,600.
Lot 280. Limerick ‘Soviet’ Trades & Labour Council, 10 Shillings, April 1919, no serial number. VF. Est. £2,000-£2,600.

Consolidated Bank Notes 'Ploughman series'
Lot 284. Currency Commission, Bank of Ireland, £1, 6 September 1937. EF. Est £300-£400.

Lot 292. Currency Commission, Hibernian Bank, £1, 10 June 1929. GF. Est £240-£300. 1929 Hibernian £1 notes are scarce.

Lot 311. Currency Commission, National Bank Ltd, £10, 2 October 1931. Nice GVF. Est £1,800-£2,400. This should do better than the estimate.

Some Lots to watch:
Lot 205. Bank of Ireland, £1, 23 October 1916. Good Fine overall. Est £200-£260. This lot will be a good test of the market for these notes in lower grade.
Lot 235. The National Bank Limited, £10, 1 February 1937. gVF-aEF. Est £400-£500. A very tough note to get without damage, cleaning, or grafitti.
Lot 237. The National Bank Limited, £20, 1 January 1949. gVF. Est £400-£500. A scarce note in better than average collectible.
Lot 349. Central Bank of Ireland, £5, 5 September 1975. UNC. Est £260-£300. A very high estimate. It will be interesting to see if this price level is realised for a note that has not been graded with a number number by one of the US grading companies.
