Ploughman Scan (PSS) banknote survey Data changelog

Post by Mac »

The question of how many Currency Commission Consolidated (Ploughman) banknotes are likely to have survived, and the proportion of surviving notes for each bank has long been a topic of speculation and discussion. The Ploughman Scan Survey aims to address these questions

A survey is likely the best way to determine the answer. This depends on the collecting community out there recording every note they see, and posting the information. Notes need to be recorded as images to avoid errors in transcription.

I invite members and visitors to post a pic (or link to pictures) of any Ploughman notes they have come across, take a snap with your phone, camera, scanner, whatever and post it here, or email the pic to lists AT irishpapermoney DOT com for inclusion.

Every banknote counts.

Key letter codes I'm using to identify the additions.
£1 notes: BA, Bank of Ireland; HA, Hibernian; MA, Munster & Leinster; NA, National; EA, Northern; PA, Provincial; RA, Royal Bank; UA, Ulster.
£5 notes: use K in place of A, hence BK etc.
£10 notes: use T in place of A, hence BT etc.

April 2015: Total for April: £1 x 10, £5 x 4 , £10 x 5 = £80

09.04.15
£1 x 2, including a Northern £1 note—don't see an unrecorded Northern too often :).

Edit 11.04.15
£10 Provincial (low grade), plus £1 Provincial (nice grade).
(The £10 note is one of the ones with major foxing damage along the bottom. There are about half a dozen of these.)

Also added another scan of a National £5, 15.3.33 image from the good grade hoard. The note had been recorded ages ago, but without a scan. These are continuing to fill in at a nice steady pace.

Edit 14.04.15
3 x £1 notes added

Edit:26.04.15
Additions. 2: £1 x 4, £5 x 4, £10 x 4 = £64 fv, 16 notes.

Additions to the data set are being made steadily, though I think £1 notes continue to be under-represented. Maybe I'm wrong on this!

Amongst the April notes was a date (Hibernian, 9.5.35) not previously pictured in the dates section of the website, though a couple of examples of the date were recorded by number in older data from the days of Irish Numismatics.

May 2015: Total for May: £1 x 42, £5 x 10 , £10 x 4 = £132
50 notes. Including Northern £5, 1933.

The number of £1 notes recorded relative to the numbers of £5 and £10 notes continues to rise. This is as I expected, as I consider £1 notes to be under-represented in the survey.

£70 in newly recorded notes for August isn't bad going.
Heading for September, one of the auction Months, not much in Ploughmans turning up in the auctions though.

Re: Ploughman banknote survey Data changelog

December 2015: Total for December: £1 x 9, £5 x 3, £10 x 2 = £54 face value.

December running total: £54

Last month I received a usb with about 83 Ploughman scans on it. This feedback was a direct result of the Coin News article I wrote on the PSS, and it is much appreciated. A detailed breakdown of the notes follow.

In all, 21 x £5; 22 x £10; 60 x £1 note scans were submitted. Most had been recorded previously, either as images or as serial numbers written down. However, the image quality of many of these scans are much better than those already in PSS, so I was able to upgrade 40+ scans (in some cases from a grubby black and white photocopy to a nice 150dpi colour image!), and add a few more images to replace a serial number only record. These scans also added to the background information as detailed below. A very useful addition to PSS.

Feedback of this kind will keep improving the PSS into the future.

Notes new to the survey were added as follows: £1 x 9; £5 x 3, £10 x 2 = £54 face value.
£10 x 2
MT x 1 A Cubbins, one out of a known run of notes, which extends the run by two numbers, creating another gap note that might be out there.
NT x 1

£5 x 3
HK x 2, NK x 1
Also included images for some notes recorded long ago as old data for which there were no images in PSS. One of these was 03NK 052599, which is less than EF in grade, still an unused note. This illustrates that not all of the notes in the run were gEF-AU-UNC. At the other end of the run is NK03 052516 which is gVF with two pin holes.

£1 x 9
BA x 4; NA x 2; RA x 2; UA x 1, a nice high grade Lester signature note.

January 2016: Total for January: = £49 face value.
£ x 4; £5 x 3; £10 x 3.

Spotted two Pound notes on ebay:
£1 x 2
BA x 1; MA x 1.

EDIT: 25.01.15
Added £37 FV images scavenged from old dealer's lists:
2x £1; 3 x £5; 2 x£10.

Added £37 FV images scavenged from old dealer's lists:
2 x £1: NA x 1, UA x 1;
3 x £5: HK x 1, UK x 2;
2 x £10: BT x 1, PT x 1.

Edit: 31.01.16
1 x £10 NT

All of the notes are in in quite a nice grade. There were many other Ploughman notes on the lists, but unfortunately without pictures or serial numbers. Still, this lot isn't a bad catch.
