Here is a later example of the 10,000 shillings (£500) note issued by The East African Currency Board in 1951. This high grade example achieved a hammer price of £53,000 at auction.

Here is an attractive Straits Settlements specimen note printed ca.1919. The $10,000 note was the highest denomination of this series.

The S$10,000 was only used for internal Bank Settlements.

Examples of the lower denominations entered circulation but the $10,000 appears to have been used only for inter bank transfers and as such would not have been available to the general public.

The 10,000 Ringgit of Negara Brunei Darussalam is one of the highest denomination notes issued in modern times with a face value close to 2,000 euro (August 2021). Here are examples from the 1989 and 2006 Series.

Here is an attractive high denomination $10,000 note issued by Singapore during the 1980s’. This is the highest denomination of the Bird Series with a face value now of close to 6,000 euro.

This note had a relatively low purchasing power in its time. The note became 50 MK in the 1963 issue when the Finnmark was devalued by a factor of 100.

Here is a high denomination note for £1000 issued by The Bank of Ghana in 1958. This denomination was only used for inter-bank transactions.

The Singapore Orchid Series of banknotes was issued between 1967 and 1976. The $10,000 is the highest denomination. Remarkably, $10,000 replacement notes were also issued and are extremely rare. Examples of the standard issue and replacement $10,000 notes are shown. The replacement note was sold recently at Noonans as part of the Frank Goon collection and achieved a hammer price of 100,000 S$ (€68,000, £61,000).

Here is an example of a $10,000 note issued by the Singapore Board of Commissioners of Currency, first released into circulation in 1989. This is the highest denomination of the Ship Series of notes which were issued between 1984 and 1999.

This cancelled 10,000 Kronor note issued by The National Bank of Sweden in 1939 is up for sale at Noonans later this month. This is the highest denomination note issued by the bank and would have been a significant sum of money in 1939. An interesting feature is the use of coloured fibres in the paper as a security feature. A similar security feature was used on Irish Ploughman notes from 1929-1941.

Those colored fibers were also used on some Chinese currency of the 1920s and 1930s.

Interesting to see the position of the fibres, on left side of the Swedish note. They are int he centre of the Ploughman notes and on any Chinese notes I have seen them on.

The use of fibres in banknote paper also occurred in Scotland. The British Linen Bank adopted what they called granite paper in 1937. Here is an example from 1938.
