Provincial Bank of Ireland - Issued Uncancelled Notes - 1825-1902

Post by DOC »

Early notes of the Provincial Bank of Ireland are readily available in the form of issued notes that are cut cancelled and also as proof notes. However, issued notes in complete form that are not cancelled are extremely rare.

Here is an example of the first note issued by The Provincial Bank of Ireland in 1825 by the first branch established in Cork. The note is signed by Robert Murray, manager of the Cork branch, and was retained by the bank as an uncancelled note.

Here is another example of an issued uncut note. This is the first note issued by the Dungarvan Branch of The Provincial bank of Ireland which was established in 1835. It is signed by the first manager, B.Banks (Benjamin Banks).

Other examples of No.1 notes are known. The attached link illustrates a No.1 note issued by the Omagh branch (1834) and Paper Money of Ireland (2nd edition) illustrates a No.1 note of the Banbridge Bank (1833).

Here is a Provincial Bank of Ireland £1 note from 1864 which appears to be issued, uncut and uncancelled. The single branch note is signed by William M’Cullough, manager of the Newry Branch.

There are a small number of these around as issued uncancelled notes. It is rare to find an example, and they tend to not sell so well when they do turn up, probably because there are so many cancelled examples extant, perhaps giving the impression that the notes are common!

Here is the No.1 note issued by the Omagh branch: Sept 1, 1834.
I got this scan years ago, can't remember where, probably at one of the Dublin shows.

It is Interesting to see that the 1834 Omagh branch, £1 note, bears the same signature as the 1864 Newry £1 note. William M’Cullough had a long career with the Provincial Bank of Ireland and was the first manager of the Omagh branch when it was established in 1834. He became first manager of the Newry branch when it was established in 1846.

This early multi-branch Provincial Bank of Ireland £1 from 1870 also appears to be uncut and uncancelled. The note is signed by R.H. Abrahall who was an accountant at Waterford Branch at this time. This is an interesting example of a note which is not signed by the branch manager.

Interesting, not being signed by a branch manager. A collecting sub-category suggests itself there: anomalous signatories!

This note is also notable as it appears to be the only known example of its type which is uncut uncancelled. A few examples of the later type with the title ‘Provincial Bank of Ireland Limited’ are known in uncancelled form. Here is an example from 1884 which is signed by the manager of the Youghal Branch, Arthur Graves.

Provincial Bank of Ireland notes from the 19th century, are rare in issued, uncut, uncancelled form. A few £1 notes are known but higher denominations are exceptionally rare. The Irishpapermoney site illustrates an example of a £2 note, issued by Carrick-on-Suir Branch, dated 15th October 1860 (link below). The note is signed by the branch manager, James M. Melville.

It certainly looks intact. A very rare note uncancelled.
