Extraordinary Issue 01X and 02X One Pound notes, dated 11.3.63

I hadn't heard of the Revenue Commissioners producing currency!

A small batch delivered in less a less secure way than normal due to the disruption and numbered differently so they could be identified like warcodes.

But then why not put them into circulation!

Maybe they didn’t need them in the end and kept them in case of another emergency. Something stopped them issuing them. If they had been issued at the time or even for a few years afterwards they would have hardly been noticed.

Maybe stored offsite in as some sort of emergency contingency plan in case something happened to their main storage area or the couldn’t get supplies and numbered differently if that site was compromised.

That is what they did with them in the end, when they ran short of £1 notes in 1974!

A few more examples have been turning up lately. Currently the recorded total stands at 191: 104 - 01X, 87 - 02X.

It's been a while since an update.
With the addition of some more notes, the latest count stands at 208 notes.

89 - 02X

Many more 01X notes have been coming to light than 02X notes, with just two added on over a year.

01X 655730 Stated as "AU" with damage and discolouration from water

All recorded previously, the 01X 655730 was recorded in 2016, the same image - somebody has had it for a while!
