Bank of Ireland Enamel Pin Badge featuring a One Pound note 1878

Post by Mac »

Here is a pic of a Bank of Ireland Dublin enamel badge featuring a £1 note from 1878, probably made then or shortly thereafter.
I've been looking for one of these for a long time, and have missed several of them. I live in hope!

Anyway, I have no idea as to what the background to the badge is—some kind of promotional event perhaps?

Here is another example of one of the badges.
This one is in very nice grade. EF/AU

The design on the badges is very sharp, and all the branches of the bank can be read quite clearly. This is high quality work. I am doing a bit of research into these.

And another low grade badge. (Not a very good picture either).

I've seen two different types of badge to date, differing in the design of the fastner on the reverse.

Here's a picture of one of the notes that the badge is based on.

Here is a similar badge, of an English note of 1877.
Perhaps someone was just manufacturing banknote badges for general use, and that they have nothing to do with the banks in question.

Here is another type of pin badge, featuring a Bank of England £10 note dated 1879, but mounted on a long pin.
This is the first badge I have seen with a long pin rather than a short fastener.

The note does have a serial number, but it is obscured beneath the text.

And here's a Scottish Pound badge!
The picture on these is beginning to fill in.

I've been keeping my eye out for a Scottish note for a while—I kind of expected one to turn up sooner or later.
I can't see which bank it is, I'll have to do a little background searching to match the note design.

EDIT: After having a trawl through the web, it might be a note of the National Bank of Scotland, as that bank had its headquarters in Edinburgh, and used a Lion and Unicorn on its notes. Can't find a similar actual note though. I like a good mystery :)

EDIT 10.12.16: Found one!

Another new find.
This one is a £20 note from 1877. I wonder how high they went in denomination.

The plot expands with these!
I just spotted an enamel badge of a French 100 Francs note from ca1875.

Here's a pic, along with an image of an actual note from the same era.

The count for the Bank of Ireland badge now stands at 5.

A wikimedia page on these badges has appeared recently. It expands on the background of the badges somewhat.

Found another Scottish banknote brooch. This one is in quite good grade.

Having read the article in the June edition of Coin News which asked for info on these enamel badges my one of a National Bank of Scotland £1 note has MADE IN FRANCE stamped on the back removing all doubt about their country of manufacture.

That's very interesting, as the other National Bank of Scotland badges I have seen have no such imprint!

Could you post an image of the front of the badge also please.
