I wonder if the National Library might have any examples of the First Internal loan certificates.

Good suggestion, it looks like the National Library has examples of these First Internal Loan Certificates. I’ll make a visit when it reopens. :)

I came across a $10 External Loan Bond recently sold alongside an interesting photo showing bond sellers outside the US Capitol. It gives some insight into the fund raising activities of Eamon De Valera in the USA. The caption on the photo reads as follows:

Photograph at the US Capitol, of Congressmen John J. Eagan and Cornelius A. McGlennon, both of New Jersey with two Irish Bond sellers, Eileen Quinlisk and Amelia Rosser.

There appears to be two colour variants for the $10 First External Loan Bonds, namely, green and steel grey. Examples attached. The first posting in this thread of a specimen bond appears to be of the green variant.

Interesting to see the Prospectus and reference to the larger denominations above $100 which appear to be rare.

I came across this interesting article which mentions a link between the original Fenian Bonds issued in the US in the 1860’s and the Republic of Ireland Bonds issued by De Valera and the first Dáil.

The deadline for repayment was 30 June 1936. After that the bonds became collectibles!

Here is an example of an orange coloured $10 Bond issued in 1921 as part of The Second External Loan. The colour seems to be a little different compared to the cancelled example shown earlier in this string.

I came across this image of a Republic of Ireland $10 bond with accompanying booklet which was up for sale recently on ebay. Given that the map was from the pre-partition era, the green-orange colour coding is unusual. A little investigation reveals that the map on the cover of the booklet is based on a depiction of the 1918 General Election results and the 1918 map is attached for comparison.

As a collector of these notes over the years I’m still trying to locate a 2nd external $10 bond issued. Does anyone have insight into whether less where issued in this denomination for this final issue ?

Another marketing flyer for the 1st external bond issue … interesting how they highlighted Ireland could more than pay its way in the event that these bonds would ever be paid back !!

Interesting to see the supplementary documentation which provides additional insight into this bond issue. The additional documentation would be expected to enhance the monetary value of the bonds.

Here is a $10 Republic of Ireland Bond from the first issue in 1920. An unusual feature is that the bond is partially issued to a named person ‘Bernard Kiernan’ but there are no serial numbers.

An attractive group of unissued Republic of Ireland bond certificates described as a ‘complete set’ sold at Whyte’s recently for 2,700 euro plus fees. It seems likely that there were bonds of the First Series for sums higher than $100 as an example for $1,000 has been confirmed for the Second Series.

This is a nice group, with all of them in decent grade. I believe the 100 is much scarcer than the other denominations. 2,700 plus the fees (around 28%, I believe) brings them up to around 3,450, a solid price.
