National Bank of Ireland £1 1879 enamel badge

Post by Mac »

I recently came across a badge of a National Bank £1 note, dated 1 Jan 1879. Picture below.
There had been mention of an enamel badge of the National Bank some years ago, but this is the first confirmed sighting of an enamel badge of a banknote of this bank.

The reverse shows the pin, and that it was made in France which is consistent with all the other such enamel jewellery recorded.

Before now, the only examples of an Irish note seen on these enamel items are those of an 1878 One Pound note of the Bank of Ireland. The existence of this badge featuring a National Bank note opens the interesting possibility that there could also be enamel jewellery items, badges and cuff links, imaging banknotes of the other Irish banks, and quite likely those of other Scottish banks besides the recorded examples featuring a One Pound note of the National Bank of Scotland.
