A set of European Union euro specimens from 2002 recently appeared at auction (Stack’s Bowers) and attracted much interest. Examples of the 5 euro and 10 euro notes are shown with signature of Wim Duisenberg. The serial numbers are interesting and are the lowest possible numbers for Spain and Germany which meet the checksum requirements.

This is the first time I have seen official Specimen notes of the Euro.

The specimen note number (1908) suggests that several specimen sets were printed. I wonder if the countries chosen differed from set to set and if any Irish specimen notes were printed?

Here is the 20 euro specimen note from this set. The serial number (Z00000000009) is the lowest possible number for Belgium.

I notice that the typeface for the Specimen No. varies on the notes.
It would be interesting to see a T prefix specimen turn up. It would also be interesting to see if all the specimen notes bear the same serial numbers, or if they used actual notes as specimens.

I have seen some notes from different sets and it appears that the serial numbers for each denomination are the same and always the lowest number for that country.

Here is an example of the 50 euro specimen note from the set. The serial number (X00000000002) is the lowest possible number for Germany.

Here is the 100 euro specimen note from this set. The serial number (S00000000007) is the lowest possible number for Italy.

Nice to see these! Do we have the 200 and 500 also?

Yes, I have the images of the 200 and 500 euro notes also.

Here is the 200 euro specimen note which is probably the most eye catching note of the set as a number 1 note: P00000000001 is allowed for The Netherlands.

Here is the 500 euro specimen note to complete the set. Like the 100 euro specimen, this one has the serial number S00000000007 which is the lowest number allowed for Italy.

All in all, a very interesting set. This is the first set of Euro specimen notes that I have seen.
