There are references to bankers operating in Ireland as far back as the 13th century. These bankers associated with the Knights Templar, most likely operated as money lenders rather than bankers in the modern sense. The earliest records are of Jose de Keteler and William Outlawe of Kilkenny who operated a banking business in Kilkenny known as the ‘Templar Bank’ in the 1170’s prior to the death of Jose in 1180.

Dame Alice Keteler (also spelt Kyteler), the daughter of Jose de Keteler, married the banker William Outlawe who was the former business partner of her father. She is famous as being the first person in Ireland to be accused of witchcraft. She established an Inn known as Kyteler’s Inn in 1324 which still operates in Kilkenny today. After the death of her first husband William Outlawe, she married Adam Le Blond, who was also a banker, based in Callan, Co. Kilkenny.
