This eye catching East African Currency Board £1 Trial design from 1954 is up for auction next month at Noonans. It is described as an ‘oil painted composite essay on board’ and indeed has the appearance of a painting.

Here is an attractive Leeds Bank £10 proof note from the 1840’s. An interesting feature is the early use of colour.

This Ceylon 1854 Oriental Bank Corporation 50 Rupees is up in the current Noonans' world banknotes sale.
A super attractive note even in low grade.

Personally I have always found William Lizars' notes to be highly attractive examples of early steel plate engraving. He worked mainly for Scottish and English banks but was responsible for the later issues of the Agricultural & Commercial Bank of Ireland and also a couple of designs for the Fermoy Bank.

Here is a Caledonian Bank £1 note of 1839, one of his classic designs featuring a view of the River Ness and Inverness Castle as well as allegorical vignettes of a Highlander hunting and a female representing agriculture.

While on the subject of Lizars and his work for Irish banks here is an image of his 30/-note for the Agricultural & Commercial Bank. The vignette also appeared on the 25/-,35/-, £3 and £5 notes of this series. The vignette was also used on a note he engraved for the Leeds & West Riding Bank, a repeat use very common with Perkins Bacon notes but less so with Lizars.
