Munster Bank 1864-1885

Post by DOC »

The Munster Bank was established in Cork in 1864 and mainly operated in the southern counties of Ireland. In 1870, it took over the esteemed private bank of La Touche & Co., Dublin. The Munster Bank was successful for a time but failed in 1885, reforming as the Munster & Leinster Bank. The latter eventually issued notes in 1929 with the Consolidated Banknote (Ploughman) issue.

Although the Munster Bank never issued its own notes, collectors do have the opportunity to obtain cheques of the bank. These are scarce but do appear on the market from time to time. Here is an example of an unissued cheque from the early days of the bank.

One of the bank's branches is on Dame Street (it might have been its head office), Dublin, now an AIB. The building is quite ornate, with the MB logo on the facade.

It is a pity the bank never issued notes.

The Munster Bank never issued banknotes but I wonder if they were permitted to issue post bills? Here is an interesting example of a post bill issued in 1872 by The Hibernian Bank, a non-note issuer at the time.

Interesting thought on the possibility of post bills from the Munster Bank!
A worthy subject for a bit of research, I think.
