Dublin Commercial Bank 1836-1837
A letter sent in July 1837 by W.H. Holbrooke, engraver and retail trader, to Perkins & Heath, includes a sketch for a proposed design of a £1 note of the ‘Dublin Commercial Bank’. However, it appears that the bank never traded under this name and was subsequently launched as ‘The Provident Bank of Ireland’. An article published in 1836 links Thomas Mooney with the original proposal for the ‘Dublin Commercial Bank’. Mooney subsequently founded ‘The Provident Bank of Ireland’ with W.H. Holbrooke in 1837.

From memory these sketches are now in the British Museum. I know I've seen them somewhere!

The sketch does resemble the Provident Bank of Ireland £1 note.

Here is an image of a Provident Bank £1 note for comparison. The Provincial Bank of Ireland complained at the time that the design was similar to their notes and a deliberate attempt to confuse the public.
