Ulster Bank 1929 - Continuing

Post by DOC »

This 1929 Ulster Bank £100 was sold recently at Noonans. An interesting feature is the bank stamp on the reverse which indicates that the note passed through the Limerick Branch in 1970 and suggests that these high denomination notes circulated for many years after their issue date.

The same was the case for high denomination Northern Bank 1929 overprints, £50 and £100 notes, resulting in the ready supply of examples in high grade that we see today!

The Ulster Bank issued its first Northern Ireland Series from 1929-1934. The following denominations were produced: £1, £5, £10, £20, £50 & £100. These notes were hand signed and uniface. Here is an example of a £50 note issued in 1929, signed by C.W. Lester. His printed signature later appeared on Ulster Bank Ploughman notes.

The first date of the higher denomination Ulster Bank Northern Ireland Issue notes all had dates in June 1929, with just the £1 and £5 notes having dates of 6 May 1929.

Yes, the first date for the higher denomination notes was 1st June 1929 while the first dates for the £1 and £ 5 denominations was 6th May 1929. Here is an example of an Ulster Bank £10 from the first Northern Ireland issue. This note is signed by Robert M.B. Harrison.

Here is an example of an Ulster Bank £1, first date, from the first Northern Ireland issue which is signed by H.Gore. An interesting feature is that notes of the first date were overprinted ‘NORTHERN IRELAND ISSUE’ but the overprint was replaced by a revised plate which had the text engraved on it.

It is interesting that no significant premium exists for the overprinted notes over those with 'Northern Ireland Issue' engraved. I would tend towards classifying them as two different sub-types.

The Ulster Bank introduced reverse printing on it notes in 1935 as part of its Second Northern Ireland Issue. The issue was short lived spanning the years 1935-1938 and features the bank’s Head Office Building in Waring Street. Denominations of £1, £5 and £10 were issued.

Here is an example of a £1 note, dated 1938, which was sold in 2022 at Noonan’s as part of the Gus MacAmhlaigh Collection. This is an exceptionally high grade for this scarce type.

Here is an Ulster Bank £5 note from the Second Northern Ireland issue introduced in 1935. The note is signed by John Griffith and was sold at Noonans, British and Irish Banknotes Auction, in October 2023. This design was short lived and the notes consequently scarce, with a last date for the £5 notes of 1st October 1937.

Here is an Ulster Bank £10 note from the Second Northern Ireland issue with an issue date of 1st May 1936. The note is signed by C.W. Lester and was sold at Noonans as part of the Gus MacAmhlaigh Collection in 2022. Only one date was issued for this denomination and the notes are consequently scarce. This is the highest denomination issued for the Second Northern Ireland Series.

The Ulster Bank further modified the reverse design of its notes in 1939 to include a sunburst surround of the Head Office building. This design with hand written signatures ran until 1948 and is classified as The Third Northern Ireland issue of the bank by Paper Money of Ireland.

This example of a £1 note from 1940 is signed by D. Lockheed and was sold at Noonan’s Banknotes Auction in August 2022.
